The Seven Holy Mysteries

The sacraments are sacred acts through which God's grace is communicated to believers. The Ethiopian Orthodox Church recognizes seven holy mysteries that sanctify all stages of Christian life.

💧

Baptism (Tebilat)

ጥምቀት

The sacrament of initiation into the Christian faith. In the Ethiopian Orthodox tradition, baptism is performed through full immersion in water, symbolizing death to sin and resurrection in Christ.

🕯️

Chrismation (Meshisha)

ምስሕ

The anointing with holy chrism (consecrated oil) that follows baptism. This sacrament confirms the gift of the Holy Spirit and seals the baptismal covenant.

🍞

Eucharist (Qurbana)

ቅርባን

The central act of Christian worship where bread and wine are consecrated and consumed as the body and blood of Christ. The Divine Liturgy is the Ethiopian Orthodox form of the Eucharist.

🙏

Penance (Metanoia)

ሔዋርያ

The sacrament of reconciliation with God and the church. Through confession of sins and absolution by a priest, believers experience God's forgiveness and restoration.

⚕️

Anointing of the Sick (Meshisha Arquanit)

ምስሕ ሕሙማን

The sacrament of healing for those who are seriously ill or near death. Holy oil is applied with prayers for healing and spiritual strength.

Holy Orders (Qedase)

ቅደስ

The sacrament through which men are ordained to the priesthood or diaconate. This sacrament confers the grace to serve the church and administer the other sacraments.

💍

Matrimony (Qedase Zewoged)

ቅደስ ዝወገድ

The sacrament that unites a man and woman in Christian marriage. The couple is crowned and blessed, and their union is sanctified before God and the church.
